Dear Friends,

Our bingo games have not been as well attended by our workers the past 6-8 weeks as they have been in the past. While there are surely many reasons why this is so, Bingo remains an outstanding revenue source for Beth Sholom. If our Bingo games fail to deliver the same revenue as projected, the income would have to be replaced. The most likely scenario would be a dramatic increase in dues. Please find a way to support Beth Sholom by helping out. If you already work one or more Bingo games a month, I urge you to continue your fine work. If you do not, please strongly consider helping out. The shortage of workers appears to be acute on the second and fourth Mondays. Also please consider helping Sisterhood by working in the kitchen.

The following are the highlights of the May 13th Board of Trustees meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: Andy Mekelburg reported that with two months to go in the fiscal year, we are reasonably close to budget on most items.

Board of Education: Cindi Diamondstone reported that the Board of Education is considering overhauling the Sunday programs so that all children will arrive and depart at the same time. They are also beginning to review the entire Hebrew/Sunday school programs so as to better integrate the curriculum from Nursery school through Confirmation.

Bingo: Carl Lazerow reported that Bingo receipts have been slipping, and the number of workers has dramatically lowered. Bingo needs more workers.

New Business: Pauline Horn and Andy Carpel met with a representative from the Frederick Keys about scheduling a “Jewish Heritage Day” at Harry Grove stadium. The tentative date is Sunday, July 25, 2004. Please mark your calendars for what promises to be an exciting day. More information will follow next month.

The following are the highlights of the May 13th Annual Congregational meeting.

Standing Committees: Andy Mekelburg led a discussion on the 2005 budget. Our budget will remain balanced with a modest 5% increase in dues.

Beautification/Dedication: Marianne Erlichman advised that the only major project currently being considered is Menorahs for the Community Center sanctuary.

Sisterhood: Karen Ashwal talked about Sisterhood’s request for additional Bingo kitchen workers. Please contact Sisterhood and find an evening each month to help.

Gala Committee: Stephanie Egly spoke for the Gala committee and advised that this year’s upcoming Gala will be Saturday evening 11/20/04 at the Community Center. Tickets will be priced at a very reasonable $18 a person. The committee is hopeful for a large turnout, so please make every effort to support our Synagogue by attending this event.

Day School: David Epstein reported that the Day school has 11 children enrolled in the program for next year. There is room for only a few more children.

Election of Officers: The nominating committee presented the following slate candidates that were approved by acclamation of the Congregation. President – Andy Carpel, 2nd Vice President – Stephanie Egly, Treasurer – Richard Stern, at-large Board members – Ken Berkowitz, Sanford Blum, Don Lachman, and Andy Rosenfeld.

Volunteer of the Month: Please join me in congratulating Anne Cohen as the volunteer of the month. Anne worked very hard last year with the Long Range Planning Committee in the search for a new Rabbi. Anne also has volunteered with the Board of Education and was the catalyst behind the creation of the new “PrimeTimers” social committee. Please join me in thanking Anne for doing so much in improving Beth Sholom.

Final thought – Please thank Paul Kane, Lynn Bevilacqua, and Sally Wolf for their time served on the Board of Trustees. These three good people served on important committees and did fine work on behalf of all of us.
