Beth Sholom offers children's
prayer and play program
Kid-ish Kids is a teen-led child-friendly Saturday morning Jewish prayer service program for children aged 3 to 8, held weekly during the school year in Beth Sholom's Weinberg Chapel. The purpose of the program is to introduce children to Jewish prayer, celebrations, and fun each Shabbat. Most importantly, the program offers lots of warmth and love, and give children a sense of belonging to the synagogue.
Each Saturday morning from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kid-ish Kids conducts a 20-minute prayer service, led by Carly Berkowitz. Children visit the main sanctuary during the time the Torah is carried around the congregation, then return to the Kid-ish Kids room for a kids' kiddish followed by playtime.
Birthday celebrations are available for parents who wish to do so for their five-year-olds. The fifth birthday is very special in Judiasm. Traditionally the fifth birthday represented the time to begin Torah study as put forth by Rabbi Judah ben Tema, a Talmudic scholar. The five-year-old would be brought to the cheder, place of study, and for the first time wrapped in the father's tallit. Treats would follow the service and were often cookies in the shape of the Hebrew letters dipped in honey.
During the five-year-old birthday celebration at Beth Sholom, the Jewish child will receive a special birthday cake and goodies served at the Kid-ish Kids Saturday morning meeting time. The child will be called up to the Bima by his or her Hebrew name and will be wrapped in his or her parent's or the rabbi's tallit for a special blessing followed by the parents' special thoughts. In addition, a gift from the synagogue will be presented to the child. The birthday service at the Bima will conclude with Adon Olam.
In addition to offering prayer time, play time, and fifth birthday celebrations, a Lego program, spearheaded by our Master Builder Andrew Kuebbing, offers kids the opportunity to design an Ark and Torah made from Legos. Andrew will find age-appropriate Lego activities for all ages culminating in a group effort masterpiece, our Kid-ish Kids ARK. Donations of Legos are encouraged and welcome.
Kid-ish Kids is a Beth Sholom program created for and by parents of children 3 to 8 years old. Teens and grandparents are encouraged to volunteer their time and share their energy and wisdom with the congregation's younger children.
Parents can enroll their children in the program for a pledge of $18 - $108 per year. Sign up via the synagogue's website and click on the Kid-ish Kids page, or send donations to Kid-ish Kids, Beth Sholom Congregation, 1011 North Market Street , Frederick, Maryland 21701.
