President's March Bulletin Article
by Marcy Taylor
Spring is hopefully around the corner and we have now completed our collections for the Alan P. Linton Jr. Emergency Cold Weather Shelter. Thank you for all the generous donations!
Our next collection will start in mid-March and continue through May. NCJW and Kol Ami Social Action Committee are working together to help the Frederick County Public Schools by collecting school supplies for students whose families are in need. Please check the announcement in the Bulletin for details.
The Seasons for Peace and Non Violence is in full swing, featuring weekly programs focused on creating awareness of nonviolent principles and practice. Please join NCJW Frederick Section and Frederick Interfaith for a video presentation, Building Bridges of Understanding with Neighbors, which features brief explanations of 11 different religions. The video will be followed by small group discussions about beliefs and customs. This program will take place on at 4 p.m. on March 8 at the Unity Church in Frederick (One West Ninth Street).
Our next meeting will be on March 15 and we will have a representative from the national office of NCJW as our guest speaker. Hazel Groman will speak on Agunot, the practice of refusing to grant divorces to women without their husband’s permission. According to Jewish law, a husband has the power to delay or prevent his wife from divorcing him by refusing to give her a Get. These women are forced to live as an Agunah (a chained or anchored wife), treated as still married in the eyes of Judaism and unable to remarry within Orthodox Judaism without receiving a Get. I hope you will join us as we learn more about this critical issue facing Israeli women. See the announcement in the Bulletin for details.
NCJW will be sponsoring the Oneg for the Friday night service on March 20.
