Sisterhood

Beth Sholom Sisterhood, organized in 1960, is the strong right arm of the synagogue.

The organization provides an opportunity for women to network and to support the work of the synagogue. At the same time, Sisterhood works closely with the National Council of Jewish Women, sponsoring joint programs throughout the year.

Beth Sholom's Sisterhood maintains the gift shop at the Community Center, staffs and maintains the food service during bingo evenings, and provides kosher catering for congregational and members' simchas, Friday evening Onegs and Saturday morning Kiddush luncheons.

The Sisterhood also sponsors an annual book and gift fair in the late fall, underwrites holiday parties and model seders for the Sunday and Hebrew school students, supports the nursery and religious school teachers and purchases and presents a personalized Siddur to each Bar and Bat Mitzvah teen.

For more information on Sisterhood-sponsored events or how you can become a member, contact Carol Blum, president, at (301) 662-5021.

For simcha catering information, contact Eileen Marcus or Ellen Berkowitz. For Oneg and Kiddush lunch sponsorship, contact Carolyn Snyder at (301) 694-3991 or Sylvia Haber at (301) 695-4910.

Meet Ellen Berkowitz
Ellen, the congregant every synagogue cherishes, is a dynamic preschool teacher, a former Sisterhood co-president and an essential part of the kitchen team. She is a regular member of a bingo team and attends adult education classes. Ellen and her husband Ken have three children, all of whom were educated and became a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Beth Sholom. Ellen and her family continue to maintain a deep connection to their roots through Beth Sholom.
