Fall Family Hike with the Rabbi

Wednesday, Oct 27th 10:30a to 12:30pJoin Rabbi Hersh for a Fall Torah Hike on the Wednesday of October 27th up to Maryland Heights. We’ll meet by the footbridge in Harpers Ferry and push off at 10:30am. This is not an easy hike or suitable for young kids. We will hike between 6.5 miles with about 1500 ft of elevation gain. You bring snacks and a lunch, the rabbi will bring the Torah. We’ll learn about how being in “the heights” can help us gain a greater sense of spiritual elevation. Please let Rabbi Hersh know if you plan on joining at rabbi@bethsholomfrederick.org.

Halachic Study on "Adoption" with Rabbi Hersh

Sunday, Oct 31st 11:30a to 1:30pReal life and halakhah intersect every day. What happens when a rabbi is preparing for his wedding and he wishes to acknowledge his adopted father on his ketubah? What are the implications of his learning on our understanding of families, relationships, and status within Jewish law? Modern families and modern interpretations of Jewish law come together in this engaging and relevant teshuvah. The CJLS is sponsoring the International Seminar for Halakhic Study, a movement-wide seminar in which Conservative/Masorti congregations, communities, and schools will come together to study a specific teshuvah of the CJLS. During the Jewish year of 5782 (2021-2022), the recommended day for the International Seminar for Halakhic Study is Sunday, October 31, 2021 (25 Marheshvan 5782). This year's teshuvah is Adoption by our colleague Nate Crane. Participants may gather in a congregation or regionally with congregations coming together to study (or whichever way it works best for your community). Rabbis who are educators may want to schedule the program for a weekday when school is in session. Participants will engage in a number of the key texts of the teshuvah. After studying the teshuvah, the rabbi and participants will discuss the merits of different approaches. Please register your congregation, school, community, or organization below. If you have any questions, please contact Ilana Garber.
