Tradition has it that it was announced to the Israelites in Egypt that the Torah would be given to them 50 days after the exodus. To that end, the Torah prescribes that the days from Passover to Shavuot, when the Torah was given to the Israelites, are to be counted, symbolizing the eagerness with which the Torah was received. This time period is known as the Counting of the Omer, and is a time of spiritual exploration and an opportunity for the deep introspection and growth necessary for receiving the Torah. The tradition is to count each day and reflect on the spiritual qualities or Divine attributes associated with that day. During these 49 days of reflection and inner renewal, the mystics developed a plan of study to teach us how to strengthen our own lives. They studied 7 qualities and emotional attributes, which they identified as essential for a healthy and fulfilling life: • CHESED (lovingkindness) • GEVURA (discernment, restraint) • TIFERET (harmony, compassion) • NETZACH (endurance) • HOD (humility, gratitude) • YESOD (bonding) • MALCHUT (leadership, correct speech) .
